Our society is located in the
Otoe County Museum of Memories in Syracuse, Nebraska.  We meet monthly on the second Thursday of each month. We alternate our meeting sites every other month between the Otoe County Museum of Memories in Syracuse, and the Morton-James Public Library in Nebraska City.

Our society is a member of the Nebraska State Genealogical Society (NSGS), Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), and is sponsored by both the Morton-James Public Library in Nebraska City and the Otoe County Museum of Memories in Syracuse.

Our Mission

1.  To collect and preserve all available Otoe County, Nebraska genealogical material, and to share ideas with anyone interested in genealogy.

2.  Assist in preparing and completing family lines, to be filed for future reference and to further genealogical research.

3.  Gather by degrees, a library for the use of the Society, composed of all obtainable books, monographs, pamphlets, manuscripts, etc., related to genealogy.

Supporting OCGS' Mission

While most genealogical societies are charging up to $25.00 for their annual membership fee, the Otoe County Genealogical Society has maintained its low $10.00 membership fee by posting our monthly newsletter online.  This saves our society hundreds of dollars in postage and copying fees and eliminates unnecessary costs.  These savings are then passed onto our members, which ultimately helps us to retain our members each and every year.

Membership fees and publication sales are used to help fund our annual projects, which include our Cemetery Preservation Project.  Each year we dedicate ourselves to cleaning up, documenting, and then preserving the abandoned cemeteries in our county.  Many of these cemeteries have been neglected for several decades, and the cost of preserving them sometimes runs in the hundreds of dollars annually.

All donations that our society receives are dedicated strictly to the Cemetery Preservation Fund or General Operating Fund, whichever is designated by the donor.  If a donation is given for a particular cemetery, then 100% of those funds go directly to that particular cemetery.

All donations to the Otoe County Genealogical Society are tax deductible.  If you'd like to learn more about donating to our society, please check out our Donations web page for further details.
